And now, just three episodes in, a major character —Opie Ryan Hurst — has been beaten to death, sacrificing his own life to protect his best friend Jax Charlie Hunnam and the motorcycle club that caused the deaths of his wife and father. As soon as the episode finished airing, fans were shocked, heartbroken and confused.
Many wondered if Hurst had asked to leave the show, as some other actors have done in the past. Creator Kurt Sutter spoke to reporters on Wednesday morning to explain his decision to kill off a major character who had been on the show since the beginning. Sutter said that when Hurst read the scripts for the episodes that follow this tragic turn of events, he understood the importance of his characters death — which Sutter said will resonate through the rest of the series.
As for the way Opie was killed, volunteering to be the one to die in prison, which leads to a violent beating in a prison cell, Sutter said that that is a realistic situation in that world. From the very beginning, he planned for the show to run for no more than seven seasons, even if it was the most popular television show. He knew that season five would be the catalyst to get Jax where he needed him to be for the series finale.
Sutter wanted Jax to become dangerous and turn to the dark side. Sutter says that something inside Jax also died that day. The good man that Jax wanted to be died along with Opie. In September , Sutter says that he saw a news story where a video had surfaced about what corrections officers in an Alabama prison were doing to inmates, which Sutter says makes the story plausible.
Pope let Jax decided who was going to die, but Opie made the decision for him when he volunteered himself. Sutter revealed that he loved all of the characters on the show and did not enjoy killing anyone.
It was heavy. For the first few seasons of the show, Jax and Opie were best friends. Although Jax leaned heavily on Opie, they experienced somewhat of a falling out due to Clay Ron Perlman.
