When you start to look at altitude and altitude sickness and what it can do to your body, people do get concerned, however our policy of taking a minimum of seven days allows you to acclimatise well. The rains are in April, May and November but nowadays climate change has changed this pattern so sometimes the rains come earlier or later. During the rains we run our Rongai climbs as the northern side of the mountain is more sheltered. A full moon climb of Kilimanjaro , or indeed a new moon climb, is often a popular time to climb. Summit night can be spent walking under the light of a full silvery moon so that you don't even need a headtorch; or, since Kilimanjaro is situated on the equator, under a full sky of both north and south constellations.
In fact from high up on the peak you can see the North Star and the Southern Cross in the same sky. The longer treks also tend to have a higher summit success rate.
The Marangu route is considered an easier ascent and takes between five and eight days. In comparison, those opting for the Lemosho trail should allow six to eight days. The Northern Circuit is not only the newest route, but also the longest. Traversing the quieter northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, you should allow at least nine days to climb using this trail. The Machame route takes 6 days, and takes you through five diverse climatic zones. The number of miles to hike Mount Kilimanjaro varies according to the route you pick.
Umbwe is the shortest route, but also the steepest. It measures 23 miles 37 kilometers. The longest route is the Northern Circuit, coming in at 56 miles 90 kilometers. In between, you have Shira 42 miles 67 kilometers , Marangu and Rongai, each 40 miles 64 kilometers , Lemosho at 35 miles 56 kilometers and Machame at 30 miles 49 kilometers. In short, yes you need to be fit to climb Mt Kilimanjaro.
Supplementary oxygen is typically carried as standard by tour operators running Mount Kilimanjaro treks. While oxygen is typically necessary for climbs in environments with altitudes that exceed 23, feet 8, meters , climbers can experience the effects of altitude sickness below this elevation as well.
In addition to oxygen, operators will advise clients showing mild symptoms of altitude sickness to take a break and descend to a lower part of the trail. On a long distance hike such as Mount Kili manjaro, rain is not your friend. However, there is a pronounced wet season.
Most climbers are encouraged to tackle the mountain when the weather is driest as it i s safer and much more enjoyable. Precipitation is lowest from August to October, making these the best months to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Rainfall totals rise slightly from December to February and in June and July.
From March to May the rains come, making this a wet time to hike. Wetter months are also cloudy, which not only affects visibility but also overall visitor satisfaction. The crater rim runs around the outside of the center of the volcano. Camping on the crater floor, amongst the glaciers, is sometimes an option for adventurous, well-acclimatized climbers. There are two other volcanic cones: Mawenzi, a technical climb, and the Shira plateau, now a flat area formed by the former peak collapsing.
The National Parks Authority is responsible for issuing permits to climb Kilimanjaro. The Tanzanian towns of Moshi and Arusha are the main starting points for any Kilimanjaro climb Adventure. Bustling with activity, most tour operators have their base in one of these towns, and there are plenty of good accommodation options, restaurants, shops, and markets. Moshi is closer to the international airport, about 40 minutes by road, where Arusha is around 90 minutes.
The closest international airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport. JRO which is served daily by many airlines. Obviously, those who lived near the mountain knew perfectly well that it existed!
