What is the difference between evil and suffering

Most people experience suffering at some time in their life. Religions attempt to explain suffering, to help people to cope with it and to learn from it.

For some religious people, the fact that people suffer can raise difficult questions about why God allows this to happen. Some people say that God allows humans to make decisions for themselves and that suffering is caused by the choices that people make.

Is there a purpose to suffering? Is suffering the price humans pay for free will? It can be the right response to a perceived evil, the sign and substance of a healthy emotional life. Still, only evil is evil and suffering can be good.

We need to define the word evil. Since all existence comes from God, and God is all-good, it follows that evil cannot come from God or be a form of existence. Evil, consequently, is a specific form of non -existence. To repeat, evil, is the absence of a good which should be present. What then is suffering as distinct from evil? S uffering is the felt response to something perceived as being evil.

Different evils are all unpleasant in different ways, and the crucial point is that they should be unpleasant to motivate us to change things. We ought to be repulsed by evil. In answer to the question: Why did God not prevent the first man from sinning? Leo the Great responds, "Christ's inexpressible grace gave us blessings better than those the demon's envy had taken away.

Some consider it to be the outcome of ignorance and to have no beginning. Most religions teach that moral evil should be opposed. Attempts should be made to minimise the impact of natural evil. Suffering Suffering is the bearing or undergoing of pain or distress.

Questions raised by the existence of evil and suffering in the world What does the presence of evil and suffering say about God's love, power and purpose? Is there a purpose to suffering? Is suffering the price humans pay for free will? How do different religions respond to evil and suffering?
