Despite only having ruled for half a decade, Ozai was still one of the most progressive leaders of the Fire Nation. He catalyzed the Fire Nation's industrial age and even improved their economy, basically making them the most powerful country in the world of Avatar.
During his sovereignty, and under his vision, the Fire Nation's military progressed the most especially with tanks, boats, airships, and other metal war machinery. In that regard, their technological advancements also extended beyond their military. With the might of the Fire Nation and their new technological war machines, Ozai painted the world map red.
The might of the Fire Nation became too much for any nation to stand and even the once impregnable Ba Sing Se was conquered through trickery and spycraft. It was something even Iroh couldn't do.
Of course, it did help that Ozai already had the hard work of his father and grandfather as a headstart. Under his leadership, the Fire Nation managed to extend their violent influence to 90 percent of the world in Avatar. Without a doubt, Ozai is one of the most popular Fire Lords ever.
Many of his fellow Fire Nation people agreed with him and helped spread his ideals and vision for the world. So, when his impending Hundred Year war victory was abruptly cut short by the Avatar, those who were loyal to him didn't give up.
Indeed, after Zuko took over as the Fire Lord, Ozai's loyalists rebelled and wanted him back on the throne-- even without his bending powers. Oddly enough, it was Zuko's supposed father-in-law who instigated this rebellion: Ukano, Mai's father.
The group even renamed themselves New Ozai Society. They did fail but the fact that Ozai still had influence even after his defeat and imprisonment is scary. Avatar: The Last Airbender has always painted Ozai as a ruthless and calculating authoritarian but it turns out he wasn't past redemption.
He assumed the title of Fire Lord at age twenty, following the death of his father, and continued to lead his country in the war. In general, he was regarded as a very capable leader by his subjects. Eventually, Azulon married a woman named Ilah , who bore two sons: Iroh, his mother's namesake, and Ozai. Azulon secured many victories against the Earth Kingdom during his reign, expanding Fire Nation territory and increasing colonization in the continent.
Starting around 40 AG, he began ordering attacks on the tribe's main city and villages in an attempt to deprive its people of their ability to resist the Fire Nation. The Southern Raiders were created to carry out the later raids. These raids were successful; by the time of his death, Katara was the last remaining waterbender in the Southern Tribe, and the Southern waterbending style was effectively extinct. Azulon warmly greeted Ursa before telling her the reason for his presence. When Azulon was in his eighties, [nb 1] he sought to arrange a proper marriage for his second son, Ozai.
The Fire Sages had told Azulon that the pairing of the Avatar's granddaughter with his son would yield a bloodline of great power. Believing this prediction, Azulon began to search for the Avatar's family. Roku 's descendants proved difficult to find, possibly by his own design.
After securing Ursa's location, Azulon and Ozai personally traveled to the backwater village to arrange the marriage. After visiting Ursa's father, the town's magistrate, they waited for the girl's return from her theater rehearsal.
Upon Ursa's arrival, Azulon warmly introduced himself and his son to his future daughter-in-law and announced their intention to arrange a marriage. Ursa accepted the proposal, and they prepared to travel back to the capital city. However, when they departed from Hira'a, a commoner blocked their way, demanding they release Ursa.
Azulon ordered his bodyguards to deal with him, but before the conflict escalated, Ursa intervened. She persuaded Ozai to leave the man unharmed and convinced the commoner to go home. After this event, Azulon and his family continued their journey back to the capital. Shortly afterward, Ozai and Ursa married.
Azulon was cremated immediately preceding Ozai 's crowning. Ozai declared Iroh was unworthy of the throne by allowing thoughts of his son's death to obstruct victory at Ba Sing Se. At some point, like his father and grandfather before him, Ozai attempted to find and capture the Avatar, but failed as they all did.
Unlike his father, grandfather, and brother, Ozai was never a general, and so he has no known great military accomplishments aside from being leader of the Fire Nation. Ozai had an arranged marriage to Ursa, and through her, he fathered two children: Zuko and Azula. Around six years before the start of the series, Iroh began the two-year Siege of Ba Sing Se, the Earth Kingdom capital, which ended when his son, Lu Ten, died in battle.
This led Ozai to request that his father, Fire Lord Azulon, change the rules so that he rather than Iroh would inherit the throne. Ozai explains that without a son the line of Fire Lords would end with Iroh, while Ozai still has two childen.
Azulon became furious, refusing to betray his first-born son's right to the throne. As punishment, Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his own son, Zuko, so he would understand Iroh's pain. Princess Ursa found this out through her daughter Azula, and pleaded with Ozai to spare Zuko's life.
Knowing that Ozai would do anything, even kill his own son to become Fire Lord, she offered him a plan that would ensure his rise to the throne and spare the life of Zuko. The details of this plan are never revealed in full, but Ozai states that Ursa did "vicious, treasonous things that night," resulting in the death of Azulon, her banishment from the Fire Nation, Ozai's rise to power, and ultimately the prevention of Zuko's death.
Despite familial ties, Zuko bore the brunt of his father's cruelty. Two years before the series began, the then 13 year-old Zuko, his eldest and least favored, spoke out in Ozai's war room against a general's plan to sacrifice novice troops in pursuit of victory. Angered by his impudence, Ozai demanded Zuko duel in an Agni Kai, not with the general who Zuko disrespected, but with Ozai himself. Seeing the Fire Lord in the arena, Zuko fell to his knees, pleading for forgiveness and refusing to duel his own father.
For this perceived cowardice and disrespect, Ozai badly burned Zuko's face, permanently scarring him. He then exiled Zuko from the Fire Nation, under orders not to return until he had done the impossible: capture the long-lost Avatar, missing for a hundred years. This was meant to be an easy way of getting rid of Zuko, as all previous Fire Lords failed to find the Avatar. With the Avatar's sudden reappearance as the twelve-year-old Airbender Aang, Ozai became more aggressive in his pursuit of victory.
Distrusting his son's competence, he promoted Zuko's rival Zhao from Commander to Admiral to increase his chances of capturing the Avatar. Unfortunately, Admiral Zhao was thwarted in his mission by Ozai's brother Iroh, who turned traitor in an effort to stop Zhao from killing the Water Tribe's patron Moon Spirit. Ozai expressed distaste at what he saw as his brother's treachery and son's failure by giving his daughter, Azula, the task of capturing both Zuko and Iroh.
Eventually, he spoke with his son Zuko, who had regained his honor by supposedly "killing" the Avatar, and helping Azula to conquer Ba Sing Se. In a war meeting with his generals, the day before the eclipse, Ozai learns from Zuko that even though the Earth Kingdom had been officially conquered, its citizens would not accept defeat as long as they had hope. At the end of the first issue of The Search , Zuko makes a shocking discovery: a letter in which Ursa states that Ozai is not his real father, and that Zuko is actually the son of her true love, a man called Ikem.
If true, this piece of information would mean that Zuko isn't the heir to the throne of the Fire Nation - Azula is. The contents of the letter hang over Zuko as he searches for Ursa to ask her the truth, but in the final issue it's revealed that Ozai really is Zuko's father. Fire Lord Ozai knew that Ikem couldn't possibly be Zuko's real father, since he'd had spies following his wife ever since they got married. In a flashback, Ozai confronts Ursa and demands to know why she lied.
