Who is maryam

Mary plays an important role in Islamic culture and religious tradition, and verses from the Quran relating to Mary are frequently inscribed on the mihrab of various mosques, including in the Hagia Sophia. Mary is one of the most honored figures in Muslim history, with the majority of Muslims viewing her as one of the most righteous women to have lived, and a minority viewing her as an actual female prophet. Muslim women look upon her as an example and are known to visit both Muslim and Christian shrines.

Muslim tradition, like Christian, honors her memory at Matariyyah near Cairo, and in Jerusalem. Muslims also visit the Bath of Mary in Jerusalem, where Muslim tradition recounts Mary once bathed, and this location was visited at times by women, who were seeking a cure for barrenness.

There is an exception of two. The ones not stabbed by Shaytaan, Maryam and Isa alayhi salaam. The most definitive quality of this noble and great woman, Maryam alayhi salaam , was her chastity.

She was chosen by Allah. She was a woman of good etiquette, good manners, morals and well spoken. She was a woman of dignity. It was not practiced that a woman would be in the Masjid but Hannah wanted to fulfil her promise to Allah so Zakariyyah alayhi salaam took it upon himself. He was a carpenter who ate from his fdaily earnings. He built a room in the Masjid for Maryam to grow up and have her privacy and worship Allah and not compromise her modesty.

She grew up and Maryam alayhi salaam loved to worship Allah. At the times when she could not be in the Masjid she would go out to the East and Remember Allah. She ate, breathed and drank the dhikr remembrance of Allah. Zakariyyah alayhi salaam would always find her, when he checked up on her — in Ibadah. But he noticed strange things. He would find with her rizq — sustenance from Allah.

She would get the fruits of summer in winter and the fruits of winter in summer. Jibraeel alayhi salaam blew into her and Isa alayhi salaam was created by the Kalimah — Kun Fayakun, Be and it is. Maryam alayhi salaam withdrew to Bethlehem. She is the only woman with a chapter of the Quran named after her. Her greatness is due to who she was, not just because she was the mother of Jesus as. She perfected her faith and demonstrates how to have tawakkul in Allah in the most difficult times, as well as excellence in devotion and worship.

She also exemplifies the best of modesty for both men and women. Truly, a reminder for us to always call on Allah to seek what we need. As described in Surah Maryam ayat 16 to 34, when approached by an angel in the form of a well-proportioned man, she immediately sought refuge in Allah the most Merciful, symbolic of her piety and modesty.
